Washington’s Yu comes through when it counts most

In a pitching match up fitting of the Bay Area’s finest softball teams, Thursday’s Transbay series opener at Lang Field between Oakland Tech and Washington finally ended thanks to an unlikely hitter.

Virginia Yu, batting in the ninth spot for Washington, knocked in Amanda Yee from second base in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending the Eagles to a dramatic 2-1 victory. The Eagles (15-1) will look to win the series Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Laney College in Oakland.

Yu’s game-winner followed infield singles by Yee and Tammy Visser, breaking up a no-hit bid by Bulldogs pitcher Marika Zumbro.

“I’m overwhelmed,” Yu said of her first game-winning hit. “I just wanted to make contact and I came through when we needed it.”

The clutch single came just an inning after the Bulldogs tied up the score 1-1. Before that, Eagles pitcher Michelle McMahon had stifled Oakland Tech (14-2) on just four hits.

McMahon, coming off a no-hitter in the Academic Athletic Association championship game, was matched all day on the mound by Zumbro, who surrendered just three hits, while striking out seven.

In the end, however, it was the Eagles who strung together enough big at-bats to take the first game in the best-of-three series pitting the league champs from San Francisco and Oakland.

“We kept our composure and stuck to our game plan” Eagles coach Carrie Wert said. “When we got someone on, we moved them over and that’s exactly what we stressed. It was a battle of the pitchers, but we stayed confident at the plate. This win helps set the tone for us for the series.”
