USF Dons men’s soccer knocks off No. 8 UCLA

USF men’s soccer has defeated a Pac-12 opponent for a third year in a row, picking up a 1-0 win at eighth-ranked UCLA on Sunday night.

After defeating eventual national champion Stanford in 2016 and beating California in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament, the Dons wasted little time to pick up a signature win this season, knocking off the Bruins in just their third game of the season.

Goalkeeper Ruben Stuiver made eight saves, including three in the final five minutes, to ensure that Sean Bowman’s 51st-minute goal would hold up as the winner for San Francisco (2-0-1).

Though the Dons were outshot 18-9 overall, Bowman became the first player to score against UCLA (2-1-0) this year, scoring off an assist from Jorge Ruiz. Bowman took five of the team’s shots on the night.

With whistles throughout a game that saw 46 fouls committed, the Dons were able to prevent UCLA from getting into a rhythm until the Bruins finally put on pressure in the final minutes.

USF will return home Friday with a chance to pick up another landmark victory, hosting three-time defending national champion and tenth-ranked Stanford at 7 p.m. under the lights at Negoesco Stadium.
