Stanford senior Chiney Ogwumike has been named Pac-12 Conference women’s basketball Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.
The awards, voted on by the Pac-12 coaches, were announced Tuesday. Hall of Fame Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer earned John R. Wooden Coach of the Year honors for the fourth straight season and 14th time overall in 28 seasons at Stanford. The coaching award was renamed after the late Wooden during the 2010-11 season.
Washington’s Kelsey Plum was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
Ogwumike led the fourth-ranked Cardinal to their 14th consecutive conference regular-season crown, averaging 27.0 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. She also had 13 30-point performances.
Plum is Washington’s leading scorer at 20.9 points per game, fourth-best in the Pac-12.
Among the players joining Ogwumike in the All-Pac-12 first team are Cardinal teammate Amber Orrange and Cal juniors Brittanny Boyd and Reshanda Gray.
Stanford’s Lili Thompson was named to the All-Freshman team.
Stanford men in Coaches vs. Cancer: Duke, Stanford, Temple and UNLV will participate in the championship round of the 2014 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Barclays Center.
The semifinals of the annual event hosted by the Coaches vs. Cancer program, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches, will be Friday, Nov. 21. The consolation and championship games will be Nov. 22.
