San Francisco State names new athletic director

San Francisco State has hired Charles Guthrie as its news athletic director, the school announced Wednesday. Guthrie will officially begin his duties July 1.

Guthrie comes to S.F. State from Clark College in Vancouver, Wash., where he was also the athletic director.

“My goal is to get the S.F. State community to take ownership of the program,” Guthrie said.

Under Guthrie’s leadership, 10 of 11 sports programs at Clark College made postseason appearances this year. Guthrie also has held senior positions in athletic and advancement departments at Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State San Marcos and UC San Diego.

“San Francisco State University has a strong history of athletic excellence, and during the 1950s and ’60s was one of the preeminent athletic programs on the West Coast,” Vice President for University Advancement Robert J. Nava said. “We will look to re-establish this and once again become a premier Division II athletics program.”Charles GuthrieCollege SportsRobert J. NavaSan Francisco State

On Sunday, California bore the brunt of what meteorologists referred to as a bomb cyclone and an atmospheric river, a convergence of storms that brought more than half a foot of rain to parts of the Bay Area, along with high winds, concerns about flash floods and the potential for heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada. Much of the Bay Area was under a flash flood watch on Sunday, with the National Weather Service warning of the potential for mudslides across the region. (NOAA via The New York Times)
