The Oakland Athletics have officially recalled Frankie Montas, along with J.B. Wendelken, the club announced on Thursday. Montas will start on Thursday night against the Seattle Mariners, who trail the A’s by 5 1/2 games for the second American League Wild Card spot.
In corresponding moves, outfielder Nick Martini and reliever Ryan Dull have been optioned, though both can return once Nashville finishes its season on Monday, with the rosters expanding to 40 as of Sept. 1.
Oakland begins a three-game series Thursday against a Mariners team that’s lost three in a row and five of its last seven, most recently being swept by the San Diego Padres in a two-game set in Southern California.
Montas started out well for the A’s, averaging more than 6 2/3 innings in his first five starts, going 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA. In his final three starts before being sent down prior to the All-Star break, though, he went 1-1 with a 5.52 ERA, with nine strikeouts and five walks in three games, averaging just under five innings per game.
He came back for two starts at the end of July, where he couldn’t get past the fifth inning and allowed six earned runs in just 9 1/3 innings, and batters hit .342 against him.
At Triple-A Nashville this season, Montas has gone 4-5 with a 4.65 ERA. In his last five starts during his most recent stint with the Sounds, starting August 3, he’s gone less than six innings four times, allowing 17 earned runs in 25 2/3 innings for a 5.96 ERA.
Montas will face WadeLeBlanc, who is coming off a six-inning, one-earned run start against the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he struck out six and allowed four hits.
On Friday, Mike Fiers will face off with Mike Leake, and on Saturday, Daniel Mengden will make his first start for the A’s since June 23, when he sprained his right foot. In his first appearance back after rehab and a stint in the minors, Mengden provided four shutout innings against the Houston Astros in an 11-4 loss on August 27, where he struck out two and walked two.frankie montasj.b. wendelkenMLBMLB TransactionsNick MartiniOakland A'sOakland AthleticsRyan Dull
