Oakland Athletics: After auto accident, Chad Pinder to start swinging again soon

OAKLAND — This past weekend, Oakland A’s utility man Chad Pinder was injured in a car accident in Denver, suffering a left elbow laceration that sent him to the disabled list.

The 26-year-old will start swinging the bat again soon, manager Bob Melvin said, as he hopes to get the most promising season of his career back on track. Before the accident, Pinder had a career-high .259 batting average with 10 home runs in 71 games. He’d been worth 2.0 wins above replacement, according to Baseball Reference.

“He’s gonna start swinging the bat here any day,” Melvin said. “I know he’s started to take ground balls from day one, so the one we’re worried about is doing something to the stitches when he swings.”

Injured outfielder Matt Joyce, who has battled back pain throughout the season, received an epidural injection and could also start swinging again soon. After a productive 2017 season in which he posted a .335 on-base percentage, he’s hitting just .203 with a .311 on-base percentage this year.

“He’s been dealing with this and obviously wants to get back as soon as possible, and you saw what he did for us last year,” Melvin said. “It’s just kind of been an issue for him for the better part of the season this year. You’d like to see some relief from that, because it’s tough enough to hit at the major league level, but when you have to deal with that it makes it awfully hard.”chad pindermatt joyceMLBOakland A'sOakland Athletics
