Oakland Athletics add Fernando Rodney, DFA Chris Hatcher

The Oakland Athletics officially added right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney to the roster on Friday ahead of the A’s series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the club announced, adding the former Minnesota stopper to an already stocked bullpen.

Rodney, who was traded for minor league righty Dakota Chalmers, will take the place of right-handed reliever Chris Hatcher on both the 25-man and 40-man rosters. Hatcher has been designated for assignment.

Already with the fourth-best bullpen ERA in the majors, the A’s add the 41-year old two-time All-Star, who owns 325 career saves (17th all time), including 89 in the last two seasons.

Rodney is 3-2 with 25 saves and a 3.09 ERA (15 ER, 43 2/3 IP) with 50 strikeouts in 46 relief appearances for the Twins this season. He has averaged over 10.00 strikeouts per 9.0 innings in 2018, and has averaged over 10.0 in five of the last six seasons.

Since May 1, Rodney is is 22-for-25 in save opportunities with a 2.50 ERA (10 ER, 36 IP) and a .224 opponent average (30-for-134) in 37 games.

In 16 major league seasons, Rodney — known for his trademark celebration of pantomiming shooting an arrow into the sky — is 47-65 with 325 saves in 397 save opportunities in his career, with a 3.70 ERA and 874 strikeouts with Detroit (2002-03, 2005-09), the Angels (2010-11), Tampa Bay (2012-13), Seattle (2014-15), Chicago-NL (2015), San Diego (2016), Miami (2016), Arizona (2017) and Minnesota (2018).

Rodney will wear No. 56 and be available for tonight’s 7:07 pm game in Anaheim.

Lefty Jeremy Bleich, who had been designated for assignment on Aug. 6, has been outrighted to Triple-A Nashville.

Hatcher, 33, was 3-2 with a 4.24 ERA (16 earned runs in 34 innings) with 28 strikeouts in 30 relief appearances for Oakland this season. Since joining Oakland via trade on Aug. 15, 2017, he was 4-3 with one save and a 3.95 ERA (25 ER, 57.0 IP) with 48 strikeouts in 53 relief appearances.

Bleich, a 31-year old Stanford product, made his Major League debut with the A’s this year and allowed two runs on two hits in 0.1 innings in two relief appearances during his stint with Oakland from July 13 to 21. He is 1-1 with a save and a 2.91 ERA in 31 relief appearances with Triple-A Nashville.
