No hoops, just record keeping

If Dean Marcic had it his way, he’d be home on his couch watching the Warriors play summer league basketball.

Instead, the chief authenticator for Major League Baseball will be at AT&T Park all week to play an easily overlooked but critical role in Barry Bonds pursuit of Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record. When the Giants’ slugger hits his 756th homer to eclipse Aaron’s mark, Marcic will lead a group of security officials whose job it is to find the person who caught it, whisk them out of the mob and confirm it as the historic ball.

“We’re ready,” Marcic said. “We’re just concerned with finding the ball, authenticating it and giving the ball to who it belongs to.”

Marcic himself said he had little interest in baseball memorabilia, though the Warriors fan said he does own an autographed Chris Mullin basketball.

But what if Marcic, also a 17-year veteran of the San Francisco Police Department, somehow comes down with the record-breaking ball himself?

“Then I’m out of here,” he said with a smile.

BARRY BIRTHDAY: Bonds turns 43 today and Giants manager Bruce Bochy was asked before the game what he thought the slugger could use to celebrate.

“I don’t know what he needs,” Bochy said with a smile while looking at the media throng. “Probably a little peace.”
