Marquise Goodwin ‘adamant he wanted to play’ after son’s death

Marquise Goodwin was the hero of the 49ers’ first win of the season. Most people in Levi’s Stadium didn’t know that he was still grieving the loss of his infant son until after he caught a touchdown pass and sprung Garrett Celek with a block to score another.

Goodwin missed Saturday’s walk through to be with his wife. On Sunday morning, Shanahan found out what happened.

Team chaplain Earl Smith comforted Goodwin before the wide receiver met with his coach that morning.

“By the time I was able to talk to Marquise, he was hurting, but he was adamant he wanted to play,” Shanahan said. “That’s something as a coach you respect. You don’t want someone just to tell it to you because that’s what you want to hear as a coach. You want someone to tell it to you because they mean it. And you could tell ‘Quise meant it.”
