Giants' sweet-swinging Scutaro seizes MVP honors

Marco Scutaro could have taken a day off after being plowed through by St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series. Instead he put on a show at the plate for the rest of the series on his way to NLCS MVP honors.

The Giants second baseman, who came over in a trade with the Colorado Rockies on July 28, set a record for multihit games in an LCS with six, tied an LCS record and set a franchise record with 14 hits in the series, all while playing sparkling defense.

Scutaro said he had mixed feelings when he switched teams, but it didn’t take him long to appreciate the new opportunity.

“When I got traded in the beginning I was thinking of stuff out of baseball,” he said. “Like where I will live and family, packing, all that stuff. A couple days later I was happy just because of the kind of team we’ve got, to have the opportunity to do something special, to be in the playoffs. And now here we are in the World Series.”

He said bonding with his new team came quickly.

“All those guys in there, I love every single one,” he said. “I think to win a championship it takes more than 25 guys. It takes from the front office all the way to the batboy, and you have to have that chemistry going.”

Manager Bruce Bochy said having Scutaro on the team made all the difference.

“I knew he was a good player,” Bochy said. “But to see him day in, day out, you really appreciate the talent that this guy has. I don’t know if it was possible for him to raise his game, that’s how well he’s played, his level. But he did, after that slide [by Holliday]. And he was just determined to get to the World Series. He led us there.”

The other players with 14 hits in an LCS are Hideki Matsui with the New York Yankees in 2004, Albert Pujols with the Cardinals in 2004, and Kevin Youkilis with the Boston Red Sox in 2007.
