Giants open with weekend-long celebration

The World Series champion Giants on Wednesday announced the club’s 2011 regular-season special events and promotional schedule, which will feature numerous giveaways and special events for fans.

After opening the season on the road, the Giants return home for a weekend-long celebration of their World Series win April 8-10. For the home opener on April 8 against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Giants will raise the championship flag.

The following day, Giants players and coaches will receive their championship rings from the 2010 season during the World Series ring ceremony and the first 20,000 fans will receive a commemorative ring keychain.

Rounding out the weekend on April 10, Giants catcher Buster Posey will be presented his National League Rookie of the Year Award.

The World Series trophy will be on display at the ballpark throughout the entire weekend.

Other highlights include four bobblehead days featuring Cody Ross (June 4), Aubrey Huff (June 25), Posey (July 10) and Tim Lincecum (Aug. 27).

The Giants will honor their  World Series championship by handing out World Champion banners on April 23; replica trophies on April 24; a commemorative world champion canvas on May 7; a world champion cap on May 21; and a world champion pennant on May 22.

Other highlights of this year’s giveaway schedule include a replica of the Willie Mays Statue in honor of Mays’ 80th birthday on May 6; Coca-Cola-Giants Orange Wearable Blanket on May 20; Fireworks Night on June 10; and a Madison Bumgarner T-Shirt on June 26.
