Drag racing anything but

If you didn’t get enough drag racing last weekend, you’ve got another chance this weekend when the Cal-Steam/Kohler NHRA Division 7 circuit takes over the lightning-quick Infineon Raceway strip Friday through Sunday. The series is part of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

Santa Rosa resident Pete Swayne will celebrate his 10th year of drag racing at Infineon Raceway at the Division 7 event. Swayne won the 1999 Top Alcohol Funny Car championship at the Division 7 level and he should be one of the favorites as more than 500 competitors converge on the Sonoma Valley this weekend.

<p>Swayne also competed in last weekend’s Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals in TAFC and qualified 14th, losing in the first round to eventual champion Jay Payne.

“I’m really looking forward to this weekend,” said Swayne, 46, who served as a corporal in the Marines in the 1970s. “It’s my home track and we just raced there this past weekend so we should be ready.”

Sweet tribute to Medlen: More than 2,000 fans attended the inaugural Eric Medlen Ice Cream Social at Infineon Raceway on Sunday following the NHRA action.

The fans not only ate their favorite ice cream, but they also donated $4,543 to the Eric Medlen Scholarship Fund. The total will be matched by Infineon Raceway and the sum, $9,086, will be awarded to the winner of Infineon Raceway’s high school bracket drag division in Medlen’s name.

Medlen, who succumbed in March to injuries sustained from an accident during a testing session at Gainesville, Fla., was a lover of ice cream, a well-known fact in the industry. All ice cream was donated by Dreyer’s Ice Cream.

Racing for charity: Nine of the most dominant personalities in motorsports will race on the same track for the first time when they suit up to compete in the inaugural Race of Legends at the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races on Aug. 17-19 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Collectively, the legendary drivers hold championships from nearly every level of racing, including Formula One, CART, Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of LeMans.

An eight-lap charity race, sponsored by Toyota, on Aug. 18 is part of the weekend. The legends will take the green flag in race-equipped Scion tC sport coupes. Scheduled to race are Bobby Unser, Al Unser Sr., Johnny Rutherford, Bobby Rahal, Parnelli Jones, Emerson Fittipaldi, Vic Elford, Derek Bell and Ove Andersson.

MONTOYA NOT LONG FOR BUSCH

Juan Pablo Montoya will race in his final Busch Series event next week at Watkins Glen, then the team will stop competing. Chip Ganassi Racing officials said the No. 42 Busch program was formed only to help Montoya adjust to NASCAR after years in Formula One. Ganassi will stop operating the team because the schedule doesn't fit with the Nextel Cup season.
