Comebacks are rare in America’s Cup lore

With Oracle Team USA rallying to tie the America’s Cup Finals at eight wins apiece, it needs just one more victory to make history.

The last time a team faced elimination and rallied to win out and claim the trophy was the Australia II in 1983, which went down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, only to win three in a row against the defending champions in New York Yacht Club’s Liberty.

That stunning comeback marked the first time a yacht club other than New York had won the event, and the last time that club participated. The Cup came back to the U.S. when Sail America, representing the San Diego Yacht Club, dethroned Australia.

No America’s Cup has previously required more than five wins to crown a champion. The next day of racing will officially make this the longest America’s Cup in history, now extending 18 days past the first race of the series on Sept. 7.America’s CupOracle Team USASan Francisco
