al has reportedly hired Louisiana Tech’s Sonny Dykes to be the Bears’ next football coach, according to multiple reports.

FootballScoop.com broke the story Wednesday, while the Bay Area News Group reported that sources told it that Louisiana Tech players met Wednesday evening, possibly to discuss Dykes’ potential departure.

Dykes’ Tech team led the nation in scoring this season with an average of 51.5 points per game, and was second nationally with 577.9 total yards gained per game. On the flipside, Louisiana Tech’s defense allowed 526.1 yards per game, the most in the nation.

Although they are 9-3, the Bulldogs will not play in a bowl game this year after hesitating to commit to an invitation to play in the Independence Bowl.

When asked early Wednesday night, school officials would not confirm Dykes’ hiring. However, earlier in the day, Cal athletics director Sandy Barbour told the Bay Area News Group that “We’re getting close. Real close.”

Dykes, 43, is 22-15 at La. Tech. Other candidates believed to be interviewed for the job including San Jose State’s Mike MacIntyre and Cincinnati Bengals assistant Hue Jackson.

Cal fired former coach Jeff Tedford on Nov. 20. Tedford, 51, spent 11 years at the school, and compiled nine winning seasons. The Bears reached bowl games eight times in his tenure.

But Cal went just 9-18 in conference play in the past three seasons, including a 2-7 mark in the Pac-12 this year. They were outscored 121-31 in their final two games to the Oregon schools.
