Bochy on potential of Bum vs. Puig, round 2: ‘I couldn’t give you the odds’

AT&T PARK — The last time Madison Bumgarner faced Yasiel Puig and the Los Angeles Dodgers, the left-hander managed to incite a benches-clearing shoving match.

Bruce Bochy didn’t feel much like handicapping the chances of a repeat before the opener of the final regular season series.

“I couldn’t give you the odds,” the San Francisco Giants manager said. “I’m not a good odds-maker. So, I can’t help you on that one. We’ll be playing this game to win. That’s all I can tell you. That’s where our focus and thoughts are and not on anything else.”

Bochy also didn’t offer much when asked to explain the long-running rift between his ace and the Dodgers’ right-fielder.

“You know, you’d have to ask those two,” Bochy said. They probably know better than me. It’s not the first time I’ve seen guys that don’t seem to see eye-to-eye in the game. I think it’s created a lot of interest with all of you and the fans.

— Eduardo Núñez played “easy catch” on the field and was slated to run on a treadmill on Friday afternoon, but remains “questionable” to play again during the regular season.

When Bochy was asked if he was “confident” that the third baseman would be ready for a potential wild-card game on Wednesday, the manager also sounded uncertain.

“I can’t say confident, ‘hopeful’ I think would be the word I’d use,” Bochy said.

— The team will announce Saturday’s starter — likely Albert Suarez or Ty Blach — after the series opener.

— With Vin Scully calling his final games of his 67-year career, Bochy took a moment to reflect on the the Dodgers broadcaster. Bochy described his meeting with Scully in the Dodger Stadium press box earlier this month as a “special moment.”

“He’s just such a great story teller,” Bochy said. “I love listening to him — everybody does. Just a genuine, humble man. It’s just so real with him and I think that’s why he’s so loved.”Bruce Bochyeduardo nunezMadison BumgarnerMLBSan Francisco Giantsvin scullyYasiel Puig
