Bay Area makes bid for Super Bowl L

Bay Area bids on Super Bowl L

Super Bowl L is less than three years away and already officials are already trying to bring the football party to the Bay Area.

The Bay Area Super Bowl Bid Committee submitted an official bid to the NFL on Tuesday to host Super Bowl L at the San Francisco 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara.

The full details of the proposal will be revealed on May 21 when the committee makes its presentation to NFL owners, who will choose between the Bay Area and Miami for the site of the 2016 Super Bowl later that day.

“It must have fireworks,” committee chair P.J. Johnston said. “We want to hold back to ‘wow’ the owners on the day that they vote for Super Bowl 50.”

Johnston said the bid is going to highlight the “state-of-the-art” features of the $1.2 billion stadium, as well as the Bay Area and its infrastructure capacity to manage the influx of media and tourists during Super Bowl week.

The Bay Area appears to be favorites now that the Florida State Legislature has declined Miami’s request for $350 million to renovate Sun Life Stadium. A ballot measure seeking a hotel tax to fund stadium renewal that will be voted on next week is also trailing in the polls right now.

The losing city will be considered as a potential host for Super Bowl LI in 2017.

“We’d like either one, but we’d love to be chosen for Super Bowl 50,” Johnston said. “We’re going to have a very strong bid.”
