Baseball auction helps wildfire victims

The Giants and California's four other Major League Baseball teams have joined forces to raise money for victims of the Southern California wildfires.

An online auction on Major League Baseball's official Web site, www.mlb.com, began Wednesday at noon and runs through Nov. 25 at 8 p.m.

Among the items up for bid are a trip to Giants batting practice during which you will be hosted by SoCal residents Barry Zito, Noah Lowry, Dave Roberts and Kevin Correia; a chance to meet and talk with Giants manager Bruce Bochy and San Diego Padres manager Bud Black, a former Giants pitcher; the opportunity to throw out a first pitch at an A's home game; a Don Newcombe-autographed baseball; an autographed jersey by Los Angeles Angels slugger and Home Run Derby champ Vladimir Guerrero; a 2007 All-Star Game clubhouse chair autographed by Padres ace Jake Peavy; the chance to be an honorary bat kid at Dodger Stadium and Angel Stadium; and a game-used base from the 2007 All-Star Game at AT&T Park.

Net proceeds will be distributed evenly between the San Diego Foundation — After-the-Fires Fund, which provides immediate and long-term assistance to those in San Diego County affected by the fires, as well as the California Community Foundation's Southern California Wildfire Relief Fund to benefit those who suffered losses in the catastrophe.
