Andy Buh reportedly hired as Cal football's defensive coordinator

Wisconsin linebackers coach Andy Buh has accepted an offer to become the defensive coordinator at Cal under new Golden Bears coach Sonny Dykes, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Sunday.

Buh, 35, had been an assistant coach at Cal’s rival Stanford for three years from 2007 through 2009, and he was the Cardinal’s co-defensive coordinator his final two seasons on Jim Harbaugh’s staff.

Buh then became the defensive coordinator at Nevada for two seasons before becoming an assistant at Wisconsin this past season.

Buh had been leaning toward accepting an offer to join former Badgers coach Bret Bielema at Arkansas, according to the State Journal, but opted instead to take the Cal job.

He is the fifth Wisconsin assistant coach to take a new job, although Buh is expected to remain on the Badgers’ staff for the Rose Bowl game against Stanford.

The defensive coordinator job at Cal is expected to be a key position because Dykes focuses most of his attention on the offense. Dykes was coach last season at Louisiana Tech, which led the nation in scoring offense but was last in the nation in total defense.

Cal’s defense was far from stout itself last season. The Bears finished ninth in the Pac-12 Conference in points allowed per game (33.1) and 10th in yards per game allowed (441.1).

Dykes filled out a number of offensive positions on his staff last week, naming Pierre Ingram running backs coach, Mark Tommerdahl special teams coordinator and inside receivers coach, Rob Likens receivers coach and Tony Franklin will be the offensive coordinator.
