49ers lose Jimmie Ward to PUP list, sign top draft pick

The 49ers were forced to place their first player on the physically unable to perform list on Friday, the first day players participated in on-field activity at training camp.

The team announced defensive back Jimmie Ward was placed on the list, from which he can be activated any time after final cuts.

Ward was hurt during the conditioning test, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. The cornerback was ranked by Pro Football Focus as the 49ers’ best last season.

The team also came to terms with Solomon Thomas, the team’s top draft pick, on Friday for a four-year deal.

Signing the former Stanford Cardinal means the Niners have come to terms with all of their rookies.
