Verdict reached in Kate Steinle trial

Members of the media swarmed the Hall of Justice Thursday, November 30 to attend the reading of the verdict reached in the case of Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, an undocumented homeless man standing trial for the death of Steinle. Following a full week of jury deliberation, the verdict came back not guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter for the killing at Pier 14 on July 1, 2015. In the end, Garcia Zarate was found guilty of felony possession of a firearm, a charge with a possible jail sentence of 16 months to three years. Photos by Jessica Christian/S.F. Examiner.
