Golden Gate Park opens new trail dedicated to parks advocate Phil Arnold

San Francisco Recreation and Parks dedicated a newly renovated trail to Bay Area Ridge Trail Council Chair Phil Arnold on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019.

The trailhead is located on the corner of John F. Kennedy Drive and Conservatory Drive East and runs behind the Conservatory of Flowers eventually connecting to Arguello Boulevard.

The trail renovation project was part of a larger effort by Bay Area groups to preserve the oak woodlands in Golden Gate Park.

“The Friends of the Oak Woodlands have been at work for years,” said Bob Siegel, a board member on the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council. “You know people were afraid to come in this part of the park. No one knew about this area of the park, it just was a forgotten area.”

The project’s landscape architect Koa Pickering said, “One of my favorite parts of this project is the fact that it is really representative of the collaboration of public and community advocacy and activists and not for profit groups coming together.”

According to the Bay Area Ridge Trail website, the trail has two to three more miles that remain to be dedicated over the next few years depending on funding.
