The Examiner Recommends

GOVERNOR

Steve Westly (Democratic primary)

The former eBay executive and current State Controller understands innovation and fiscal accountability. Though he would face a tough road to unseat Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in November, he’s the responsible choice for Democrats.

STATE SENATE, 8th DISTRICT

Mike Nevin (Democratic primary)

The longtime San Mateo County supervisor and former San Francisco police officer is a roll-up-the-sleeves politician who tackles important issues and knows how to build consensus. He’ll be an effective advocate in Sacramento for county residents’ interests.

STATE ASSEMBLY, 12th DISTRICT

Fiona Ma (Democratic primary)

After a stint on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and seven years as an aide to former Sacramento powerhouse John Burton, Ma understands what it takes to ensure local residents’ needs are met. Her sensible fiscal views are needed in the state Capitol.

Superior court judge

Lillian Sing

The San Francisco judge has earned the respect of her peers and developed a reputation for integrity and even-handedness in her more than 20 years on the bench. She also displayed composure and grace even in the face of unfair campaign attacks from her opponent. PROPOSITION A

NO The proposed $10 million annual increase in anti-violence funding is well-intentioned but offers few specifics for how taxpayers’ money would be spent.

PROPOSITION B

NO Measure to force home sellers to list eviction information on sales leaflets at open houses is duplicative and wouldn’t reduce evictions.

PROPOSITION C

NO Proposal to give more power to S.F. supervisors on the agency that oversees the massive Transbay Terminal renovation is self serving and politically motivated.

PROPOSITION D

NO Giving control of Laguna Honda admissions policy to the planning department instead of the health department is the wrong solution for The City’s nursing home.

PROPOSITION 82

NO The so-called free-preschool initiative could actually impose tuition fees to cover program costs, and some of its supporters’ claims don’t hold up to scrutiny.
