Serbian pilots defend sleepy captain who caused Air India crash

<p>WHAT: The Serbian pilots association demanded that the Serb flight commander not be “victimized” for the May plane crash that killed 158. They insisted pilot fatigue caused by Air India working conditions is the real killer.

HOW: An Indian investigation this week charged that the Serb captain slept through more than half the flight and woke up disoriented, reacting too slowly when he overshot the landing runway and plunged over a cliff.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: There is growing worldwide concern about the dangers of exhausted pilots working taxing schedules demanded by budget-strapped airlines. But calling the Serb pilot blameless is absurd.
