Spencer “Spence” Hampton

December 11, 1927 – May 9, 2019
Spencer was born in Warren, AK, the third child of the late David and Willie Mae Hampton. His family migrated to San Francisco in 1945, where they joined the Bethel AME Church. He met and married his beloved wife Jessie Mae Jones and they were together for 52 years until her passing in 2002. Spencer loved Bethel AME Church and he devoted his time working at the church in many capacities. He was a member of the Trustee Board and served on the Usher Board for more than 60 years. Spence also worked with the Sons of Allen serving meals, and other duties until his health no longer permitted it. Spence worked at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard and later became a longshoreman with the International Longshoreman and Warehouse Union until his retirement.
Spence had a beautiful smile and wonderful sense of humor and loved telling jokes. He loved his family and playing cards on Friday evenings with family and friends who would drop by. Spence is survived by his sister Esterlene Williams and Glen Hampton, and nieces and nephews. Spence will be missed dearly.
