Wounded man booked on suspicion of shooting SFPD officer

The suspect who was shot in the officer-involved shooting in San Francisco’s Castro District Wednesday was booked in absentia on suspicion of attempted murder and other crimes Friday, police said Saturday.

Sesar Valadez, 32, of Hayward, was booked in absentia on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder; felon in possession of a firearm; possession of a firearm with obliterated serial numbers; driving a stolen vehicle; discharging a firearm in a negligent manner; carrying a loaded firearm in public; and resisting arrest, police said.

Valadez was booked in absentia because he is in the hospital, where he was taken with gunshot wounds after the shooting shortly after midnight Wednesday, police said. He is listed in life-threatening condition, according to police.

The case began just a few minutes after midnight Wednesday when a citizen flagged down officers regarding what was described as a suspicious vehicle near 18th and Diamond streets, according to police.

The officers approached the vehicle, and there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and at least one officer, police said.

An officer, a 41-year-old man who is a nine-year veteran of the force, was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound and underwent surgery, according to police. He is listed in critical, but stable, condition.

Police said they plan to hold a town hall meeting about the case
within the next 10 days of the incident.
