Woman hit with hammer in hell-ride

A woman who accepted a ride with an apparent stranger Sunday was kidnapped and attacked with a hammer, police said.

The 57-year-old woman was trying to flag a taxi in the 2000 block of Market Street when the suspect, described as a 50-year-old white man, offered her a ride to 16th and Mission streets around 1 a.m., police said.

While in the car, the man struck the woman several times in the head with a hammer, police said. She tried to escape from the vehicle during the attack but was unsuccessful at first, cops said.

She finally managed to escape in the area of 24th Street and Potrero Avenue, police said.

The woman suffered lacerations above her right eye in the hammer attack, police said. The suspect fled and no arrest has been made.

Further information on the attack was not immediately available.
