UPDATE 1/16/19: The woman who fell to her death on the tracks of Muni’s Van Ness Station Monday night has been identified as Eunice Kang, 32, a San Francisco resident.

The original story follows below:

A woman died Monday night after falling from a second-floor platform at Van Ness Muni station, according to transportation officials.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which runs Muni, could not immediately comment on the cause of the woman’s fall, citing an ongoing investigation, and did not indicate whether the incident was a suicide.

The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed the woman died while on the tracks.

Van Ness station is a key pinch point for Muni trains. As emergency personnel responded to the incident at about 9:30 p.m., The City closed Van Ness station and ran all trains — including the J, K, L, M, N and T — on bus shuttles down Market Street through the night.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board Director of Communications Candace Sue told the SFMTA board Tuesday that the woman entered the station, climbed on the railing and at some point fell from the mezzanine level to the tracks below.

SFMTA staff immediately responded and administered CPR, Sue said, while waiting for emergency personnel to respond.

Counseling will be provided for SFMTA staff, Sue said.
