Woman caught digging in roadway planter cited

A woman found digging into a planter on a heavily trafficked city block Friday told San Francisco police she was searching for the urn containing her grandfather’s ashes.

Police were called to the 600 block of San Jose Avenue just after 3 p.m. on a report that a woman was acting strangely. A police sergeant suspected the woman was on drugs. A pipe fell out of her purse during the search for her identification, he said.

“The suspect admitted to using the pipe that day,” police at Ingleside Station said.

The cop was unable to positively identify her, so he gave her a “pending citation” for possession of narcotics paraphernalia, police said.
