Warming trend for the weekend

Despite officially being fall, summer weather will dominate a weekend that’s packed with outdoor events around The City.

The temperatures today will reach into the low 80s, and the warm weather should stick around until the middle of next week.

Several street festivals and outdoor events will coincide with the summery temperatures. For instance, the 27th annual Folsom Street Fair, which attracted hundreds of thousands last year, will take over South of Market on Sunday as the thermometer rises to about 84 degrees.

“My understanding is Castro, [gay] pride and Folsom Street got together in the ’90s to better coordinate their dates,” fair Executive Director Demetri Moshoyannis said. “We just got lucky.’’

This weekend, there is also the Polk Street Blues Festival, the Cole Valley Fair and the Portola Festival.

The weather story should remain the same — light winds, low 80s and clear skies — until about Wednesday when temperatures drop back down to the 70s, according to meteorologist Diana Henderson with the National Weather Service.

The heat is nowhere near record-breaking.

On Saturday, the mercury would have to hit 93 degrees like it did in 1954, and Sunday would have to reach 94 degrees like in 1992 to go down in history, Henderson said.
