Victim gets burned by her own pepper spray

A woman fended off a thief on a Muni bus in the Bayview district Tuesday night only to have her cellphone snatched in a flurry of chemical spray, Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The altercation erupted at the rear of a 9-San Bruno bus about 8 p.m. when the 20-year-old victim pepper-sprayed a woman who was trying to steal her ring. The suspect’s friend then reportedly grabbed the canister of caustic gas and turned it on the victim.

The bus driver pulled over near the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Silver Avenue and booted off all three women. The suspects fled on foot, and it was only after they were gone that the victim realized her cellphone had been swiped from her purse.
