UCSF chancellor stepping down

The chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco is stepping down after four years to become chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

University of California President Janet Napolitano announced Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellman's departure on Tuesday. Desmond-Hellman will remain in her position until March.

UCSF provides medical and dental care and training and conducts medical research.

Napolitano said Desmond-Hellmann helped navigate the institution through difficult financial times, and make it number one in National Institutes of Health funding for public schools.

Napolitano has appointed UCSF School of Medicine Dean Sam Hawgood to serve as interim chancellor.
