Supervisor John Avalos says Ocean Avenue is transforming.
Property owners along Ocean Avenue are expected to vote Nov. 16 on whether to form what is known as a community benefit district and assess themselves an annual fee to pay for services beyond what the city is offering in the prescribed area.
The Board of Supervisors approved on Tuesday legislation introduced by Avalos, authorizing the vote.
Avalos, whose district includes Ocean Avenue, said that the corridor has “experienced incredible changes over the past decade. We have seen undergrounding of our utilities poles, we’ve seen new improvements on Muni, great streetscapes landscaping spaces and this is the latest in many of these changes.”
Avalos said if the district is formed – formation also requires approval by the board – there would be increased maintenance work, graffiti removal, tree maintenance, as well as marketing to try and fill up vacant storefronts, including those left by the departure of a Blockbuster and a Rite Aid.
