Three men arrested in Mission triple shooting

A drive-by shooting near the 16th Street BART Station in the Mission district early Tuesday appears to have been the result of an attempted robbery, police said.

Three men were wounded, one critically, near Mission and 16th streets about 3:50 a.m. following a dispute with robbers who fled in a black Mercedes Benz station wagon, Officer Gordon Shyy said. Investigators haven't said what the robbers were trying to steal, but they apparently left empty-handed.

The critically wounded man, 46, was shot in the chest numerous times and two others ages 40 and 47 were hit in the legs and are expected to survive.

Police managed to get a description of the vehicle, which was spotted by officers at Third Street and Gilman Avenue in the Bayview district.

The men failed to stop for officers, and after a pursuit they crashed into parked cars at Cameron Way and Nichols Way in the Alice Griffith housing projects, Shyy said.

“As an officer exited his patrol vehicle to make contact with the suspects, the suspect vehicle backed into the patrol vehicle, injuring the officer,” Shyy said.

The cop reportedly suffered a minor back injury.

The three men were finally detained, and the gun believed to have been used in the shooting was found on the roadway a few blocks from the crash scene, at Fitzgerald Avenue between Ingalls and Hawes streets.

The suspects have been identified as Larry Carr, 34, Jason Whittenburg, 30, and George Vickers, 33, all San Francisco residents. They were booked on multiple felonies including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an illegal firearm and evading police officers.

Investigators are looking into whether the men are connected to other robberies.
