Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi said Thursday three of four deputies who allegedly staged fights in San Francisco’s County Jail have been put back on modified duty, without inmate contact, pending his department’s administrative investigation.
Public Defender Jeff Adachi initially made the case public when he revealed in March his office had found evidence four deputies in The City’s main jail at 850 Bryant St. had been staging fights between inmates and betting on the results, among other allegations.
The three deputies who are back to work include Clifford Chiba, Eugene Jones and Eric Staehly.
The fourth officer, Scott Neu, was relieved of duty Tuesday and told of the department’s intent to proceed with his dismissal. In 2006, he was accused in a civil-rights lawsuit of sexually tormenting several inmates.
Meanwhile, criminal investigations by the District Attorney’s Office and the FBI into the jail fights and an escaped inmate continue.
