Sleeping man robbed, struck with metal pipe in Mission

A 46-year-old man was asleep on a Mission district sidewalk early Tuesday when he was robbed and then struck with a metal pipe.

The man’s belongings were riffled through near Woodward and 14th streets around 4 a.m., police said. When he confronted the thief, he was struck several times with the pipe.

The thief then fled north on Woodward Street.

No detailed description of the assailant was released.

The wounded man was cut over the eye and taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment.
