Senator honored for student journalism advocacy

State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, has been awarded a Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award by the Journalism Education Association. Yee has authored two laws to protect student speech rights and journalism education: AB 2581 in 2006, which prohibits censorship of college student press, and SB 1370 in 2008, to protect university employees — including faculty advisers — from retaliation for assisting students in exercising free-speech rights.
