Search continues for missing canoer off coast of Treasure Island

Rescuers are continuing their search this morning for a canoer who went missing near Treasure Island on Wednesday evening.

Three people were in the canoe near the island when it overturned, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Two of the boaters swam to shore and headed home, and the third, a man, climbed back aboard the canoe.

The two who left later returned to the shoreline and contacted the Coast Guard at around 6:15 p.m. when they could not find the third boater or the canoe, Coast Guard officials said.

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter and two boats, and Sausalito and San Francisco fire and police boats were called in to assist with the search.

The helicopter search was later suspended because of low visibility, but the helicopter was dispatched back to the area at first light, Coast Guard Petty Officer Caleb Critchfield said this morning.

Critchfield said shoreline searches are being conducted by police in cities including San Francisco, Sausalito, Tiburon and Berkeley.

The Coast Guard asks anyone who sees the missing canoer to call (415) 399-3451 or 911.
