Sculpture using remains of Transbay Terminal approved for new depot

A $1.15 million art project set to be a centerpiece of the new Transbay Transit Center was approved on Thursday.

The Transbay Joint Powers Authority approved a contract with local artist Tim Hawkinson to design a “landmark entry sculpture” at the new transit depot, which is set to open up in 2017 in The City’s SoMa District.

The sculpture, located at the northeast corner of the new center, will feature salvaged remains from the 71-year-old Transbay Terminal, which was demolished last year to make way for the new transit station.

Hawkinson will begin work on the sculpture at the site during construction of the $4.2 billion center. The sculpture, which meets preapproved artistic guidelines set for the center, will not interfere with construction work at the site.
