As required by a voter mandate, the San Francisco Public Library is now re-examining its library hours.

In November 2007, voters approved Proposition D, which extended for 15 years the Library Preservation Fund, which requires that a portion of property taxes go toward library operations.

Included in the ballot measure was the requirement that the library provide at least 1,211 library service hours per week. The legislation also requires that the service hours and library services undergo an assessment every five years for possible changes, with public meetings held in all 11 Board of Supervisors districts. The five-year assessment is under way, with six meetings scheduled for the remainder of the month.

The library system currently offers 1,314 service hours per week with a plan to increase to 1,334 hours this fiscal year, according to library spokeswoman Michelle Jeffers.

San Francisco’s Main Library in the Civic Center is open seven days a week, with hours of operation of 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
