San Carlos man gets 14 years in dope case

A San Carlos man was sentenced Monday to 14 years in prison under a plea deal in which he admitted to possessing and intending to sell methamphetamine and cocaine, the U.S. Department of Justice announced today.

Rafael Ramirez, 38, admitted to a federal grand jury that he distributed more than 58 pounds of methamphetamine and over 66 kilograms of cocaine in a multi-million dollar drug ring, according to the Department of Justice. He was indicted along with 18 others on May 2, 2006.

The Department of Justice reported that U.S. District Court Judge Marilyn Hall Patel sentenced Ramirez after his guilty plea, which came as a result of four years of investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Agency, Department of Homeland Security, and other local
agencies.

The Organized Drug Enforcement Task Force utilized surveillance techniques to seize large quantities of narcotics, firearms and cash in connection with Ramirez after a tip from a cooperating defendant, according to the department.

Ramirez, in custody since his 2006 arrest, will begin serving his sentence immediately.
