San Bruno snag scrambles form filing

A breakdown in communication left City Council candidates scrambling to file campaign finance forms by Thursday’s 5 p.m. deadline because City Clerk Carol Bonner thought the deadline was next week.

A key campaign finance form for the November election, called a 460, was due Thursday, rather than Oct. 4, as previously posted by the Fair Political Practices Committee and the county’s shapethefuture.org Web site.

However, three City Council candidates and the Yes on Measure F committee were able to file their forms last-minute, by 5 p.m. Thursday, shortly after Bonner became aware of the mistake.

City Council incumbents Irene O’Connell and Jim Ruane had to scramble to file by Thursday’s deadline, as did Mayor Larry Franzella, although he is running unopposed.

Newcomer Miguel Araujo did not need to file because he has raised less than $1,000.

Measure F seeks to increase the sales tax in San Bruno by half a cent, meant to help fund general city operations and the construction of a new library.

Ruane, who said he has received approximately $2,000, said he planned on filing the forms next week until he heard the news.

“I was going to do it next week,” Ruane said Thursday afternoon. “But I’m going to call Carol [Bonner] right now.”
