S.F. killings nearly on pace to match ’05

A pair of weekend slayings brought San Francisco’s 2006 homicide rate to just below last year’s level for this date.

The San Francisco Police Department reported 96 homicides in 2005, The City’s highest rate in a decade. The 2005 rate came on the heels of a bloody 2004, during which The City counted 88 killings, a staggeringly high number after the relatively peaceful late 1990’s and early millennium.

San Francisco police spokeswoman Maria Oropeza said Monday that the two homicides brought The City’s total to 24 for the year. In 2005, police reported 25 homicides on April 24.

In apparently unrelated incidents Saturday, two men were transported to San Francisco General Hospital where they both died. Michael Jackmon, 46, was found shot to death at about 1 a.m. in the 100 block of Harbor Road in San Francisco’s Bayview District. A passer-by called police to report Jackmon’s body, Oropeza said Monday.

“The victim was found with a gunshot wound, lying in the street next to his vehicle,” she said.

Willie Allan, 49, was reportedly stabbed in the 500 block of Fillmore Street at about 8 p.m. Oropeza said Allen might have known his attacker as well as had a prior altercation with him. About 8 p.m., she said, “he was walking along Fillmore Street with two other people when the suspect comes out of a doorway, stabs the victim and flees.” She said Allen walked to a corner store at Hayes and Fillmore street, where he collapsed.

In January 2005, The City saw seven homicides, compared with five in January 2006. In February 2005, eight people were killed, as opposed to five in February 2006. In March 2005 the department reported seven homicides, while in March 2006 it reported five. In the first 24 days of April 2005, there were three homicides, while nine have occurred so far this month.
