Public toilets expanding to SoMa

San Francisco’s celebrated program to reduce human feces and urine on Tenderloin streets is expanding to South of Market.

Today, Supervisor Jane Kim, whose district includes both neighborhoods, and Department of Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru are expected to be on hand for the grand opening of the supervised toilets in SoMa. The new location is Sixth and Jessie streets. The operation includes two toilets and sinks, along with a receptacle for used needles.

Pit-Stop, which is run by DPW, previously only operated in three locations in the Tenderloin.

“We have seen the benefits of the Tenderloin Pit-Stop — a significant reduction in steam-cleaning requests and expanded access to public bathrooms that provide people a place to take care of their needs with dignity,” Kim, who represents the area, said in a statement. “We know this program works. I’m excited to extend this program to SoMa.”

In January, the Board of Supervisors approved $203,200 to keep the program going until the end of June and expand it to SoMa near Sixth Street. Pit-Stop, which began in July 2014 will cost The City a total of $353,200 this fiscal year.
