Police searching for San Mateo sex assault suspect

Police detectives today continue a “very active” search for an attempted sexual assault suspect who attacked a woman near a San Mateo apartment building on Thursday, San Mateo police Lt. Mike Brunicardi said.

Police reported that the victim had been walking in the 3200 block of La Selva Street at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, when a man standing near one of the apartment buildings there grabbed her and forced her into the bushes, and attempted to sexually assault her.

The suspect fled when a witness in the area saw the attack and called police, according to police.

“We canvassed and re-canvassed (the area),” Brunicardi said today.

“We haven't got anybody in custody, but (the case is) still open, very active and we're pursuing it, and a lot of detectives are assigned to it.”

The suspect was described as a clean-shaven Hispanic man in his 20s or 30s, with a thin build, and 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall.

He was reportedly wearing a watch cap, a black shirt and shorts at the time of the assault.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the San Mateo Police Department investigations unit at (650) 522-7650 or the Secret Witness Line at (650) 522-7676.
