North Bay-S.F. transit to increase fare

Starting this week, North Bay residents commuting to San Francisco must dig a little deeper into their pockets to ride the bus or ferry.

The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District on Sunday raised its fares 5 percent for travel between counties, spokeswoman Mary Currie said Monday.

Fees for an adult riding the Golden Gate Transit bus between Sausalito and San Francisco will increase from $3.40 to $3.60, while travel between Santa Rosa and San Francisco will go up from $8 to $8.40. An adult ticket for the Golden Gate Ferry will rise from $6.75 to $7.10.

All discount programs for seniors, children and the disabled will remain in place. Travel within Marin County will not be affected by the increase.

“Transit fares are a key part of funding our 24/7 operations,” Currie said.

This year’s rate hike is the second in a five-year annual fee-increase plan passed by the bridge district’s board of directors in March 2006. Fees for bus and ferry service will continue to rise 5 percent each July 1 through 2011.

“We try to do a balance of increasing user fees and reducing cost to make up for about an $80 million shortfall projected for the next five years,” Currie said.
