Niners lineman Joe Staley calls out fans for unleashing wave on offense

San Francisco 49ers lineman Joe Staley wagged his finger at Niner fans on Twitter following Sunday’s game: Don’t do the wave while the team is on offense, he said.

“Thanks to the fans for being so supportive and great this year so far,” he wrote on his Twitter account. “Keep it up. Just don’t start the wave anymore when we are on offense.”

It was quite a wave, lasting several turns around the stadium during the 49ers’ 26-0 victory over the St. Louis Rams. The win clinched the NFC West title for the resurgent 49ers and guaranteed a playoff berth.

During the wave, a group of six fans sitting in Section 34 refused to stand up. They were appalled that the crowd was making noise while quarterback Alex Smith was trying to hike the ball. A loud crowd can make it difficult for a team’s offense to communicate.

“LA fans do that,” one fan told a SF Examiner reporter.
