Newsom: This baby stuff is tough

Mayor Gavin Newsom is a few days into his new job — parenting — and he admitted it’s a lot of work.

Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, welcomed a baby girl into the world Friday. Since then, the mayor said, sleep has been hard to come by. The question is not how many hours of shut-eye he’s had, but “how many hours in a row,” Newsom said, jokingly, during a City Hall event Monday.

Siebel Newsom and the baby, Montana Tessa Siebel Newsom, were not due to come home from the hospital until today, but the mayor is already saying words such as “exhaustion,” and he apologized Monday morning to parents on his staff for ever being insensitive to their plight of balancing work and parenthood.“I have a profound new respect for parents,” he said.

Newsom said he’s already been busy changing diapers. The City’s first lady, who gave birth via cesarean section at California Pacific Medical Center, has been bedridden and has had a tough go of it the past few days, he said.

“Today’s a good day for her, so I’m happy,” Newsom said.

It’s only going to get more difficult when the baby gets home today and “then the reality will strike,” he said.

The mayor said he’s fortunate that he has his wife’s help caring for the child and that he “just can’t imagine” what single parents go through.

“And I don’t know anything yet. This is day three,” Newsom said. “I don’t know how people do it, to have multiple jobs. The sacrifice that parents make … I’m only beginning to appreciate it.”

Still, there’s much to do before the baby’s homecoming. Newsom on Monday, still wearing a bracelet around his wrist that allows him entrance into the maternity ward at the hospital, said he was going to be busy setting up his Ashbury Heights home for the baby.

“I know I’m not supposed to be a chain mayor, but I’ll admit that I’ve been spending time at Walgreens,” Newsom said.

He confirmed that his daughter’s first name, which was kept secret until after the birth, was inspired by his wife’s time spending summers at her family ranch in Montana, where she and Newsom also were married.

They have known Montana would be the first name “for nine months,” Newsom said.

“It’s a very special place [for Siebel Newsom], and it’s become one for me,” he said.
