Newsom references Jerry Garcia to rally Geary Street merchants

While long-winded, Mayor Gavin Newsom’s live speeches tend to stick to the political vernacular – taxes, budgets, elections and the economy. But today, during an annual Geary Boulevard Merchants Association luncheon, he strayed a bit off course when he decided to quote the late and great Jerry Garcia to make a point.

“Only a San Francisco mayor can use Jerry Garcia and quote from him,” Newsom said. “And only a San Francisco mayor should quote from Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead.”  He went on to reference a Garcia quote, “You don’t want to be the best of the best, you want to be the only one that does what you do.”  Newsom was trying to tell a group of Geary street merchants that they seem to exemplify these words.

“There is no other organization like the Geary merchants,” Newsom said. “To my point, you want to be the only one that does what you do.”

Apparently, he feels this way about other people too.
