San Francisco Municipal Railway service has been restored along the L-Taraval line after an earlier disruption that was initially believed to
have been a derailment.
The disruption began at about 2:05 p.m. on Taraval Street between 35th and 36th avenues. Service was restored shortly after 4 p.m.
Muni spokesman Judson True said investigators have determined the problem was a “split switch” rather than a derailment.
In such cases, True explained, a switch that directs the train from one track to another fails to stay in the correct position. The result
is that the wheels of the train go onto the wrong track.
Today's problem appears to have been caused by storm-related debris.
Bus shuttles were set up along the L-Taraval line between 22nd Avenue and the zoo for the duration of the disruption.
No injuries were reported.
