Man detained after deadly double shooting near Golden Gate Park

Police detained a person of interest early Saturday morning in connection to a double shooting on Friday night near Golden Gate park that left one man dead and another man critically injured.

The identify of the person of interest has not been released.

Police officers responded to a call about a shooting homicide at 6:28 p.m. Friday at Oak and Stanyan streets in the Panhandle area and found the adult men suffering from gunshot wounds, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

One of the victims died from his injuries, while the other was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition. Police have not released the victims’ identities.

An argument between a group of people was reported shortly before a man shot the two victims. Fleeing the scene on foot to Fell Street, the suspect then used a gun to carjack a silver Toyota 4Runner before fleeing the area in the vehicle.

Officers discharged their weapons while attempting to apprehend a person of interest in the homicide on Alameda Street near Deharo Street, but no injuries were reported, according to police.

The officers had been searching for the stolen Toyota, which they located on Alameda Street at 12:13 a.m. on Saturday. The Toyota was unoccupied, but “several people” were occupying a recreational vehicle parked behind the stolen vehicle, according to police.

All but one of the vehicle’s occupants complied with the officers’ orders to exit the RV, and at least one of the officers discharged a weapon shortly after making contact with the remaining occupant, who was not injured, police said.

The officers then established a perimeter around the vehicle and a Tactical Unit and Crisis/Hostage Negotiation Team responded to the scene.

A nearby resident reported on Twitter a “brief shootout” before a “police standoff” involving an estimated “20 SFPD cars” and a white RV.

At 2:20 a.m., the occupant exited the RV and was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for an evaluation. Police determined the RV’s occupant to be a person of interest in the Friday night homicide and the carjacking.

Because officers discharged their weapons during the incident, police are expected to hold a town hall meeting in the coming days.

The incident is being investigated by the SFPD Homicide Detail, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the Department of Police Accountability and the SFPD Internal Affairs Unit.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information comes in.
